CAREERS Attention* is drawn in a special section of “The Press” today to the opportunities offering for those about to leave school and start making their way in the world. It is a time of grave importance to many young people, although the decisions they have to make should be relatively simple. The structure of the educational system today is such that it is almost impossible for anyone to get into the wrong job. From the time they are tots, children’s special attributes are noted and developed, and later there are careers masters and the vocational guidance ser-

vice. Yet from time to time there are young men and women whose whole record demands that they should, for instance, further their studies in some branch of the sciences, but who are firmly convinced that the only life worth living is that of a professional whitebaiter or a telephone receptionist. Some of those starting work will begin with delusions of grandeur, harbouring mental imAges of themselves, within an incredibly short space of time, becoming all-power-ful in their chosen sphere. “Yes, yes” they see themselves saying “Never mind if he has been here man and boy for 40 years.
