CAREER AS AN AIR HOSTESS

Popular Choice With Girls From the hundreds of applications from girls each year tor jobs as air hostesses, perhaps three or four lucky ones will be chosen to fill vacancies. What is It that makes a girl want to become an air hostess, and what are the special qualifications required for the job? A career as an air hostess can be an exciting one in that often she is not sure when or where she will be flown off to next. She is also constantly meeting overseas visitors and people of interest

But the very nature of her job vvill often limit her private life, since she cannot always have definite commitments. She must be prepared to “take the air” at short notice, and she must not mind living out of a suitcase. And contrary to popular belief, she seldom marries the glamorous, rich young tycoon she met on her flight. More often than not she returns to the boy at home. To be considered for a position as an air hostess, a girl must be between 21 and 27. single, and of attractive appearance. A good general education and a knowledge of nursing or first aid are essentials if the girl is to be able to cope with any emergencies that might occur. A pleasant speaking voice, patience, a knowledge of her own country, the ability to adapt herself to all occasions, and above all, a definite interest and liking for people are required in a good air hostess.

Once a girl has been accepted as a hostess, she undergoes a short briefing course before her first flight. She learns such things as the layout of the aircraft, principles of catering, aircraft documentation, emergency drill, and how to deal with air sickness, ear discomfort, shortage of oxygen, or any such minor crisis. Then comes the practical application of her lessons. Her first trans-Tasman flight under the supervision of a senior hostess is mainly in the capacity of observer. but she learns quickly the duties expyted of her.
