To be considered for a position as an air hostess, a girl must be between 21 and 27. single, and of attractive appearance. A good general education and a knowledge of nursing or first aid are essentials if the girl is to be able to cope with any emergencies that might occur. A pleasant speaking voice, patience, a knowledge of her own country, the ability to adapt herself to all occasions, and above all, a definite interest and liking for people are required in a good air hostess.

Once a girl has been accepted as a hostess, she undergoes a short briefing course before her first flight. She learns such things as the layout of the aircraft, principles of catering, aircraft documentation, emergency drill, and how to deal with air sickness, ear discomfort, shortage of oxygen, or any such minor crisis. Then comes the practical application of her lessons. Her first trans-Tasman flight under the supervision of a senior hostess is mainly in the capacity of observer. but she learns quickly the duties expyted of her.
