Young Sprinter Transferred
With the transfer to Auckland at the end of this week of lan Hamilton, Canterbury will lose one of its leading sprinters. Hamilton, who completes his engineering course this year, will join the University club in Auckland. The runner-up in the junior national 220 yards title in 1956, Hamilton has had a fair measure of success in open competition as well, having been a finalist in the New Zealand senior sprint titles for three of the last four years.
Now 22, Hamilton became interested in athletics while’ at St. Andrew’s College and in 1955 he won the inter-schools’ senior 220 yards title. Hamilton has the distinction of being one of the two athletes in Canterbury to have beaten the present senior sprint champion, “Buzz” Jones, over 75 yards. While at St. Andrew’s and also in inter-club competitions at Rugby Park, Hamilton had some very close tussles with another outstanding sprinter, Don Davison, who set a new inter-school record in the 220 yards in the year after Hamilton’s win. During the winter months Hamilton has played indoor basketball for University.
