Serviceman’s Death In Antarctic
The body of the American serviceman who collapsed and died at McMurdo Sound on Saturday night was brought to Christchurch yesterday in a United States Navy Skymaster. He was Chief Petty Officer P. V; O’Leary, a plant maintenance technician, stationed with two others at Marble Point.
After receipt of an emergency message that the petty officer was gravely ill a Navy helicopter from the VX6 squadron was sent to Marble Point to transfer him to Hut Point for treatment.
An emergency operation was performed there but Chief Petty Officer O’Leary died that night.
