NEW BUILDING AT PHILOMEL
Cabinet Approves Proposal (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 1. The Cabinet has approved, in principle, the construction of a new five-storey accommodation and store block at H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel.
Announcing this today, the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly) said the new building would introduce into the Navy a new standard in dormitory accommodation.
Mr Connolly said the proposal envisaged a five-storey building with stores on the ground floor and sleeping accommodation for about 180 men in the remainder. Mr Connolly said the Philomel was the Navy’s largest shore establishment and was required to provide accommodation for its own company and that of ships under refit, as well as a wide variety of men under training, various specialists and the crews of submarines visiting the port. For a long time the Philomel had not had enough room for all these men, and the Navy had been forced to use H.M.N.Z.S. Elack Prince, the cruiser in the reserve fleet, as a floating dormitory. This was far from satisfactory, he said.
