ESCAPERS IN COURT
Six Months On Sentences (New Zeaiana Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Nov. 23. Colin Malcolm Hardaker, aged 20, escaped from New Plymouth prison on November 9 because his asthma had been a constant trouble to him since being transferred from Paparua prison, near Christchurch, his counsel, Mr R. D. Jamieson, told Mr A. W. Yortt, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at New Plymouth today. Hardaker and Maurice David Gillbanks, aged 22, pleaded guilty to charges of escaping from lawful custody in the prison, and to a joint charge of unlawfully taking a car, valued at £5OO, the property of George William Bracegirdle, on the same day. Hardaker also pleaded guilty to taking a bicycle, valued at £l5, the property of Michael John Fularton, and Gillbanks, also pleaded guilty to taking a bicycle, valued at £l2, the property of Alan Frank Stanner. The Magistrate said that Hardaker and Gillbanks were serving terms of corrective training, and this training could not be followed by a period of imprisonment. On each charge they would be convicted and their terms of corrective training extended for six months, the periods to be served concurrently.
