INTOXICATED DRIVERS
Two Men Gaoled At Dunedin
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, November 23.
A second offender on a charge of driving while intoxicated, Robert Stuart Bayne, aged 31, workman, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment and had his licence cancelled for 10 years and “thereafter until the Court, on application, removes the disqualification,” by Mr J. D Willis, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Dunedin today. Inspector S. C. Browne said Bayne was signalled by a traffic officer in Crawford street to make a detour at 10.30 p.m.. on Saturday Instead, he skidded to a halt beside the traffic officer and slumped over the wheel. Fifteen minutes later was certified as unfit to drive.
Another motorist who had a conviction 16 years ago for driving while intoxicated, Bernie Ronald Trainor, aged 44, welder, was sentenced to 10 days’ imprinaent on the same charge, and was disqualified from obtaining a licence for five years Trainor told the Magistrate that he Was “just celebrating the birth of a baby.”
After glancing through Trainor’s record, the Magistrate commented: “Celebrating does not seem to be an unusual thing with you.”
