LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
Mr Holyoake's Comment (New Zeaiana Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. The local body election results showed conclusively that the public “could not be bought with a lid cut in the price of cigarettes, Id off beer, and 4d off the price of petrol,” the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake) said today, commenting on the outcome of Saturday’s municipal Poll. “Saturday’s figures suggest that Mr Nordmeyer’s effort was too little, too late,” he said. /g-he unmistakable swing clearly, as I have said many times since January, 1958, shows that, in the record time of less than two years, the Labour Government has lost the confidence of a majority of the people. “It is highly significant that the Labour Party suffered its most spectacular losses in the so-called Labour strongholds in urban areas, indicating a quite substantial change-over in political allegiance,” said Mr Holyoake.
