Local Elections
Sir,—l see Mr H. P. Smith favours the ward system. Each ward should be directly represented by the candidate elected, who should live in the ward. It would be much easier for electors to vote. Instead of having to select 19 out of 41. there would be only one or two fpr each party. —Yours, etc., FRED LAWS. November 19, 1959. .
Sir,—As for Mr Stillwell’s suggestion that cars should be J parked on the “unused” grass in * Park terrace heaven forbid that * such an idea would be put into 1 practice. Park terrace at present is the gateway to the city and very beautiful. Let us make it more so and definitely squash any ideas about-a car park. Shame on Mr Stillwell for even having such a thought. Mr Griffiths’s idea of incorporating the .block from Armagh street . to Cambridge . terrace bounded by Montreal , street Into the business area of , the city is a most progressive one and-should find support from any ’ city council. Already the drift of ' the city towards the Cast is spoil- ’’ ing the shape l of our town and by including this block in the west in our town planning; it will bring the river, gardens, museum, etc., nearer the centre, a big improvement. With our town hafi and civjc centre on the library site, Christchurch will indeed have the finest lay-out of any city in New ' Zealand how 'proud wo will all b® ! ~ Yours, ete., PROGRESS.
