RESCUE IN THE ANTARCTIC.—TOP: Mr Bernard Gunn, of Dunedin, one of the two New Zealanders injured when a snocat fell into an undetected crevasse 180 miles from Scott Base, being assisted by an American medical orderly at the United States base at McMurdo Sound. Lieutenant Thomas Couzens, of Christchurch, was killed. BOTTOM: Mr Gunn being lifted into a helicopter at McMurdo Sound to be taken to the Super Constellation which brought him and the other injured man, Mr J. H. Lowery, back to New Zealand. The Constellation reached Christchurch early yesterday morning. Official United States Navy photographs.
