MAYORAL POLL

Mr Manning Succeeds The Citisens’ Association candidate for the mayoralty of Christchurch, Mr H. P. Smith, gave the sitting Labour Mayor (Mr G. Manning) some anxious moments before the final figures were announced on Saturday night. With some big booths’ returns awaited towards the end, it was possible for Mr Smith to overtake Mr Manning’s lead, but much of the great personal popularity with Christchurch voters that has been Mr Manning’s lot for many years has remained with him. While his party colleagues on the City Council and other local bodies were toppling, he held on to the mayorality, with 15,076 votes to Mr Smith’s 13,312. The election-night figures will change when the 2000 odd special votes have been counted, and it is probable that the margin between the candidates will be narrowed. Up to two-thirds of the votes are expected to go to Mr Smith. The mayoral votes were the first to be counted, and .results were telephoned to the City Council offices and taken to the Returning Officer (Mr H. S. Feast). He received the first return at 7.7 p.m. and by 8.45 pm. was able to give the complete provisional count of votes. Quick Returns In Mr Feast’s long experience with the muncipal elections he cannot recall a mayoral election in which the result was known so quickly, and this reflected the lightness of the poll. At no stage did Mr Smith’s voting reach Mr Manning's during the progress totals compiled by Mr Feast to let the candidates and the public know how the voting was going, but he narrowed the margin over the last half-dozen results. One unusual feature of the polling noticed by Mr Feast was that at four polling places each candidate received the same number of votes.
