Noisy Parties

Sir,—l am sympathetic towards the many young Americans who have been on the ice and are at present thawing out in Christchurch. But long sojourn in Antarctica seems to have so upset their sense of night and day that they chodse to do their thawing out in otherwise quiet Christchurch suburban streets between the hours of 11 p.m and 3 am., ably assisted by shrieking, swearing girls, and taxicabs that provide an almost continuous orchestration of revving engines and slammed doors—for percussion, no doubt. Residents near some flats recently opened for thawingout purposes have not had a thorough night’s sleep In three weeks. It is not the morals of the folk concerned we quarrel with but the utter lack of consideration for residents with young children and a job of work to do during the day while the thoughtless ones, by all the signs, are snoring off their excesses. Can anyone suggest a remedy?— Yours, etc., THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE THAWED. November 20, 1959.
