MOTOR-CYCLE IMPORTS

Revision Of Basis Of Allocation

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 20. The 1960 imports of motorcycles, motor-scooters, mopeds, and other types of power-oper-ated bicycles and tricycles will be on the basis of 100 per cent, of 1959 licences or 50 per cent, of 1957 imports, whichever is the more favourable to the licence holder, said the Minister of Customs (Mr Boord) today. It had been apparent for some time that an allocation of licences based on 1956 imports, was creating many anomalies for a large section of the trade, he said The year 1956 was one of peculiar difficulties in this trade due to various causes, not the least of which was the growing popularity of motor-scooters and mopeds. “I have now received the Board of Trade's report, which was made after a very detailed examination of the whole question," said Mr Boord. “I am pleased to say the Government has decided to adopt the board’s recommendation which is the allocation set out above.” “In addition, the Government is giving consideration to the possibility of some degree of local manufacture and assembly of vehicles of these types, and It is proposed to make a fuller announcement on this subject soon."
