APPLICATIONS FOR LOANS
£169,800 Sought By Unions
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON, November 20. Four South Island Rugby unions are among 16 New Zealand unions which are applying to the New Zealand Rugby Union for loans for ground and stand improvements. The union’s council, at its meeting yesterday, discussed in committee applications for loans amounting to a total of £ 169.800, but in open meeting it was reported that only the counties’ application for £3OOO had been granted and that Wanganui’s application for a £6OOO loan had been referred to the executive for a report. The four South Island unions seeking loans are Golden BayMotueka {about £3000), MidCanterbury (£800), South Canterbury (£12,500) and North Otago (£14,000). Before the applications were considered the chairman (Mr C. S. Hogg) said that although applications amounted to about £170,000, the provisional estimates showed that there would be only £lOO,OOO available as loans to unions.
Later, when the council resumed in open meeting, Mr Hogg said that in a number ot cases the council had reaffirmed Its policy that applications from centres outside the main centres would receive more favourable consideration when there was a joint arrangement between unions and civic councils.
The highest loans sought were by Wellington and Auckland, both of which applied for £25,000. All will be dealt with at future meetings of the council.
