LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
Triennial Polls Today *
Electors throughout New Zealand will be entitled to go to the polls today to choose the men and women who will represent them on city, borough and county councils and a wide variety of
other local authorities for the next three years. In Christchurch, the main interest will be in the mayoral election and that for the City Council. Christchurch’s nearest municipal neighbour, the Riccarton borough, has no election for its mayor and councillors, but Riccarton electors have the chance to elect representatives to the Lyttelton Harbour Board, the North Canterbury Hospital Board and the North Canterbury Catchment Board.
Several interesting contests are expected in county elections in North and Mid-Canterbury, and in two boroughs. Rangiora and Kaiapoi, there will be much local interest in the disputed mayoral elections.
None of the candidates standing for office has found much interest in election meetings, particularly indoor ones, but they have not been a good guide to results for many years.
Polling places will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. Hotel hours are not affected by the voting. Provisional results of all elections should be known by late tonight.
