A former President of the Canterbury Builders’ Association and the New Zealand Master Builders' Federation, Roly Smith has taken a very live interest in Apprenticeship matters, having served on the Christchurch Apprenticeship Committee for the past 17 years, and has also served on the New Zealand Apprenticeship Committee for six years. Roly Smith is very well known m the Bowling World, both as a player and an administrator. President of the Elmwood and Christchurch clubs at different periods, he was President of the Christchurch Centre in 1945, and attained the highest position in the sport when he was elected President of the New Zealand Bowling Association In 1950. It was also In 1950 that Roly Smith was both a Selector and Manager of the New Zealand highly successful Bowling team in the Empire Games at Auckland. For 23 years, Mr Smith has been a delegate to the Christchurch Bowling Centre, and for 15 years he has been on the Council of the New Zealand Bowling Association He was for 3J years an elected member of the Christchurch Transport Board, and held office during the important period of conversion from trams to buses.
