TRAFFIC WILL BE HEAVY TODAY

Appeal For Careful Driving

Today is the busiest day of the year for City Council traffic officers, according to the Traffic Superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar). “Every available officer will be on patrol round the city,” said Mr Kellar yesterday. “We request motorists to help make their job easy by complying with road rules and obeying their directions.”

City streets today would be carrying a “terrific volume of traffic,” drawn to the city by Carnival Week attractions, said Mr Kellar. He also asked cyclists to take particular care, keeping well to the left, and leaving ample room for faster-moving traffic to pass. Traffic yesterday was heavy, but it was very well behaved, said Mr Kellar.

Traffic on access roads to Christchurch yesterday was fairly heavy, said Senior Traffic Officer W. J. Tait, of the Transport Department. Traffic into Christchurch reached a peak about 11 a.m. Except for one or two inevitable misdemeanours, it was well behaved. “But a few motorists have been seen exceeding 30 miles an hour in the restricted speed zone on Blenheim road.” said Mr Tait. “We would appreciate it if motorists would observe the speed limit. There is no reason for speeding, and no good to be gained from it.”

Traffic today would be heavy', said Mr Tait. He urged all motorists to take care and obey road rules.

Train bookings were heavy, both in and out of Christchurch, said a Railways Department spokesman. The heavy outward bookings indicated that many persons were leaving Christchurch for the long week-end.
