WOOL
The wool display at this year’s show is very well presented. Fleeces are arranged in twin racks in a marquee with clearly defined sections for each breed. Poster illustrations of a rural flavour add to the interest and attractiveness of the exhibition. Pride of place' in the display is given to the Merino ram fleece from J. R. Todhunter (Rakaia Gorge) which Mr Duncan Stewart, the judge, has classed as the best fleece of the show. “It is a magnificent fleece showing good length, style and colour,” said the judge. “It is very even in fibre quality and staple length.” Among other prizes this attractive fleece wins the handsome Pyne and Boyle challenge cup for the best fleece of the show. Mr Stewart said that the exhibition was the best he had seen. Compared with a year ago he said that fleece weights were better. It Was also pleasing to see entries drawn from all parts of the South Island including Otago, Southland and Marlborough. Mr Stewart particularly praised the standard of the Corriedale and Merino sections. The wool was particularly well grown and shafty and the top fleeces in each section could not have been bettered anywhere. The hogget wools, in particular the finer sections, also showed evidence of very.goodebreeding «^sheep, a f the type from which this woof came would develop, into particularly good flocks. There was a bigger entry in the Romney section than there has been before and the judge and officials expect that this section of the display will expand further.
Mr Stewart said that exhibitqrs could, however, still give more attention to skirting of their wool. The Christchurch Wool Brokers’ Association, the Wool Board and a Christchurch store have co-operated this year to make the -presentation of the show wool more attractive.
