OUTSTANDING SHEEP

Women Exhibit Fine Entries Women who carry on the farms built up by their fathers, sometimes in difficult circumstances, perhaps when there are no sons in the family, or when sons’ interests turn in other directions, are doing commendable work all over the country. This was shown by their active part as exhibitors or co-exhibitors in the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show. One of these, who is the only child of Mr and Mrs E. S. Taylor, is Mrs I. Robinson, of “Ravenwood,” Woodend, a young mother who is assisting her husband to carry out the tradition of the fine English Leicester and Romney Marsh stud sheep in her father’s estate. The sheep from the E. S. Taylor Estate entered in the show have had considerable success. They won first place for the ewe hogget and pair of ewes in the Romney Marsh section and first place for the ewe hogget in the English Leicesters, as well as other placings and highly commends. After Father’s Death

After her father’s death in 1950, Miss Taylor carried out the stud work with no man in the family. Since her marriage in 1953 she has been a strong partner with her husband in managing her father’s estate, where there are about 550 stud ewes. Mrs Robin'son, looking very smart at the sheep pens, was receiving congratulations on the estate’s fine achievements. She has been associated with the Canterbury show since childhood, when she was placed many times in pony events and cob classes. Other women also did well with sheep entries. The Lincoln ram owned by Mrs Alex Bennett, of Rangiora, was judged champion of his class and Mrs J. M. Jarman (Darfield) won a championship and a reserve champion award with her Suffolk ram and a reserve champion award for her Suffolk ewe. Miss M. E. Goulter of Blenheim took first prize with a halfbred ram and third placing with a Lincoln ram. The Merino ram of Miss L. B. N. Wills (Snowdon) won a first and second prize and Mrs M. S. Le Cren (Snowdon) and Miss A. B. Cunningham (Leeston) received placings for their sheep.
