CRICKET Wanganui Collegiate Loses To Christ’s College

The. Christ’s College cricket team gained its first outright victory over Wanganui Collegiate School for several seasons when the annual match between the two teams was concluded at the Christ’s College ground, Hagley Park, yesterday. Christ’s College won outright by,2l runs, after a most interesting match. Christ’s College, 10 runs behind on the first Innings, scored 129 runs in its second innings. The batting was -much more consistent than it was on the first day, although again it was left to one batsman to make most of the runs. N. A. Lester batted well to score an unbeaten 46 for his side. He came in to bat with three wickets down, and was the only Christ’s College player to score consistently from the Wanganui spin attack. Lester scored only three boundaries, but his placements were good on both sides of the wicket, and he scored at a good rate. The Wanganui off-spin bowler, M. F. Smith, who had taken three cheap wickets at the beginning of Christ’s College’s second innings on the first day, claimed a further three wickets yesterday. Smith kept a good> length, and enticed most of the batsmen into error. Two other Christ’s College wickets also fell to spin bowlers, and the remaining two batsmen were run out. The Wanganui fielding was again good. 120 Required Wanganui began its second innings requiring 120 runs for the outright victory, and at no stage did the visitors look like scoring these runs. The first two wickets were lost before the side had reached double and nine wickets were down for only 33 runs, before a fine last-wicket partnership added 65 runs, and some respectability, to the score sheet. The batsman responsible for scoring most of the runs in this tenth-wicket revival was J. A. Carver, who was playing his first match fn his school’s top team. Carver’s display was the best by any Wanganui batsman in either innings. He alone of the visiting players treated the Christ’s Col-

lege bowling on its merits. He was not afraid to hit the loose ball, and he made the best use of his opportunities when the home bowlers slackened their efforts with victory in sight. His partner, C. J. R. Feltham, played his part well. Both batsmen hit some shots into the air, but they did not .go to hand. Carver hit eight fours in his innings, and these 65 runs were added in 64 minutes. The partnership and the match ended when Carver, who had just reached his half-century, mishit a full, toss from W. W. Ormond, and waS caught at mid-wicket. J. St. J. Parson was the steadiest of the Christ’s College bowlers. At the start of the innings he bowled fast, and took his first two wickets with these deliveries. Then, as -in the fi?st innings, he reverted to slow-medium offbreaks with more success. The left-arm spinner, A. G. Sadgrove, again took some valuable wickets, and both these bowlers were aided by good fielding. B. J. Crichton took two good catches.
