FIRE ON TANKER

Coast Guard Has “Startling Facts” (N.Z. Pres* Association— Copyright) HOUSTON (Texas), Nov. .11. Investigators now possess “startling facts” about the fire that destroyed the tanker Amoco Virginia on Sunday with a loss of eight lives, Coast Guard Commander Charles F. Kaminski said last night. “We spent yesterday getting a line on those we ’propose to interview,” Mr Kaminski said. “But I have already come across some startling facts. We will sift through all of the tumours to get at facts in the inquiry. We will find out how the fire started and spread.” The Coast Guard banned open flames along a six-mile strip of the Houston ship channel as gasoline and fumes continued to seep from the grounded and leaking Amoco Virginia. Seven men, including the captain, died when the tanker caught fire on Sunday. A city fireman drowned while fighting the fire. The smouldering tanker still contains 65,000 gallons of gasoline which seeped from its holds. Tides carried pockets of gasoline upstream and fumes spread and channel traffic is still halted. The no-fire order ajfplies to three miles on both sides of the Amoco Virginia and 300 yards inland.
