EMERGENCY IN CEYLON
Action Against Two Firms
(Rec. 9.45 p.m) COLOMBO, November 12. The Ceylon Government last night invoked its emergency powers to stop the retrenchment of about 300 workers by two British-controlled firms in Ceylon. The action came /ifter the firms —which had proposed the retrenchments on economy grounds —turned down a request by the Prime Minister <Mr Dahanayake) to withdraw the retrenchment notices and to halt action for four months.
The official view appeared to be that since the workers were barred from taking strike action during the current state of emergency it was also obligatory to the employers to refrain from taking action that would disturb the status quo. ’ The Government order declared services connected with the sale, supply, preservation and distribution of articles of food and drink, and storage, sale and shipping of tea, rubber or coconut produce as essential to the life of the community.
