GEOLOGY OF ICE AGES
Study Planned By Dr. Gage
Dr. Maxwell Gage, senior lecturer in geology at the University of Canterbury since 1948, will leave soon on refresher leave and make his headquarters in the department of geology at the University of Birmingham, working as a research fellow with Professor F. W. Shotton.
Dr. Gage’s special interests are the geological work of ice and the deposits and topographic features resulting from extended glaciers and ice sheets of the ice ages of the Pleistocene period. From this he- is attempting to correlate
the succession of climate changes throughout the world during the Pleistocene period, as well as the fluctuations in the size of glaciers through historic time. During next year, Dr. Gage expects to attend the twenty-first International Geological Congress, to be held in Scandinavian countries (including Iceland), with headquarters in Copenhagen. Besides the attraction of meeting geologists from all parts of the world, Dr. Gage has a vested interest because New Zealand will make a keen bid for the next congress, in 1964, to be held in the Dominion.
Numerous university geology departments and research institutions will be visited by Dr. Gage in Britain and in Canada and the United States on his return journey to New Zealand. Assistance in the cost of travelling has come from a Royal Society and Nuffield Commonwealth bursary. Dr. Gage was in the United States in 1952-53 on a Bulbright grant as visiting professor of geology at the University of Illinois. Mrs Gage will accompany him on his travels during the forthcoming refresher leave.
