BAN ON PRESS
Censorship In Ceylon
(Rec. 9 p.m.) COLOMBO, October 8
All news dispatches from Ceylon are now subject to censorship, imposed on the Ceylon press at midnight on October 6. A notice in the official Gazette after a Cabinet meeting said that among subjects covered by censorship would be matters relating to any proceedings or investigations conducted in connexion with the death of the late Premier, Mr Solomon Bandaranaike, who was shot by an assassin on September 25.
The proclamation was published under banner headlines in the national press yesterday and again in the evening papers. The leading Sinhalese newspaper, “Dinamina,” carried its report with a large picture of the new Prime Minister, Mr Wijayananda Dahanayake, with clenched fists. Its rival, “Lankadipa,” announced in big headlines: “Press gag from today—cannot publish anything about assassination of Prime Minister.”
