RACING Cadiz Sprints Well In Riccarton Work

The Wellington Guineas candidate Cadiz showed high speed over seven furlongs at Riccarton yesterday. He picked up three lengths to finish alongside his stablemate Braganza in easily the best gallop of the morninp - on the outside of the trial <rra«c

Cadiz (A. J. Stokes) and Braganza (W. Hanlin) were first to use the track, which became slightly greasy on the turns after light rain later in the training. Cadiz ran the seven furlongs in lmin 28 3-ssec, and the last half mile brilliantly in 47 3-ssec. Braganza went away three lengths ahead of him and stayed clear until near the home turn. Cadiz was doing his work well at the end of a very good trial. He will be one of three South Island representatives in the Wellington Guineas and is one of the early favourites. Braganza, which took high ranking as a three-year-old sprinter last season, will start his four-year-old racing in the Shorts Handicap at Trentham. From No. 1 in a big field he should take beating. Stradbroke's Sprint Stradbroke (N. Eastwood) sprinted half a mile in 49 3-ssec. He finished a neck in front of his stablemate Tonti (J. Leach), which joined in for the last three furlongs. The Wellington-owned Stradbroke is being prepared for the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham. He shapes as if he has done well since his easy win in the McLean Stakes at Wingatui. Motueka <N. Eastwood) started a mile keenly and finished it strongly in lmin 47 4-ssec. He ran the last half mile in 52 l-ssec. Motueka’s next race will be the Wellington Handicap, in which he was placed last year. Cheyenne (W. Hanlin) and Four Kings (O. Anning) recorded lmin 19sec for six furlongs and 52 2-ssec for the last half mile. Cheyenne’s next race will be the Wainui Handicap at Trentham next week

following in the Rimutaka Hack Handicap at Trentham. Brilliant Effort Search Warrant (C. T. Wilson) led Gaytana (N. Eastwood) by a neck after running six furlongs in Imin 15 2-ssec, the last half mile in 49 l-ssec. They did not pick up speed quickly, so this was a very good gallop. Search Warrant is engaged in the Shorts Handicap on the first day at Trentham. Gaytana looks as if she has thrived since her rather unlucky second in the Geraldine Cup. Kelp (T. Wilson) outran Navarro (N. East wood) in the straight towards the end of their mile gallop. Navarro was clear almost from the start, and Kelp acted sluggishly for a time, but his finish was strong, and it caried him a length and a half clear of Navarro.

Kelp ran the mile in Imin 47 4-ssec and the last half in 51 2-ssec. He is a Wellington Handicap light-weight.

Terracotta (P. H. Jones) sprinted half a mile in 53 2-ssec. Later her stablemate Carrageen, also with Jones up, recorded 53 4-ssec.

Cruising (C. T. Wilson), Tickled Pink (R. B. Taggart), and Quite Able (A. H. Eastwood) finished their work by running half a mile in 52sec.

The stablemates Vitamise (R. W. Gould) and Cairo News (D. Hepburn) followed in 50 l-ssec. Vitamise is engaged in the Rimutaka Hack Handicap at Trentham. She made a big impression in winning at her first start at Ashburton in September. Romancing <P. Graham) sprinted half a mile in 50 3-ssec. It was a smart solo gallop.

Hunted (W. A. Gibbs) and Amazing (C. T. Wilson) followed n SO Waterfall’ (A. H. Eastwood) ran seven furlongs in Imin 33 3-ssec. She was going well at the end after sprinting the last half mile in 50 l-ssec. McCool (N. Eastwood) brilliantly ran a mile in Imin 42 l-ssec, the opening half in 50 4-ssec. He was eliminated from the Wellington Handicap on the first day at Trentham and his immediate programme is now uncertain.

Gladwyn (N. Eastwood) and Royal Return (P. Graham) did well to record Imin 17 4-ssec for six furlongs later in the morning. They ran the last half mile on terms in 49 4-ssec.

Rustic (L. J. Ellis) and Magic Circle (A. J. Stokes) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 19 2-ssec, the last four in 52sec. Rustic will race next at Trentham. Her first start there will be the Wainui Handicap. Abou, Ben Adhetn (T. Wilson) made an impression in his sixfurlong sprint. He recorded Imin 19 l-ssec for the distance, and quickened to run the last half mile boldly in 48 4-ssec.

Centesimo (R. B. Taggart) and Awatere <R. W. Gould) sprinted five furlongs, the last four in 50 4-ssec.

Abou Ben Adhem has won twice in three starts this season and will have a strong southern
