Trentham “The Press' Special Service WELLINGTON, October 8. Appreciating the firmer footing. Ruve had an outstanding trial at Trentham this morning for the Masterton Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Masterton on Saturday. The Oamaru candidate for the Masterton and Wellington meetings. Cardinal King, was let off with light exercise in the middle of the course. His appearance left tittle doubt that he has done plenty of work since he last raced nearly 12 months ago. He is to be ridden at Masterton by J. W. Harris.
Kirklea ran the best half-mile, and Rifleman showed speed over three furlongs. The weather was squally for the training, but the outside of the trial grass was not affected, and provided perfect going. Ruve (McFarlane) ran the last seven furlongs of a mile in linin 28sec, the last four taking 51 4-ssec. She was eased near the finish, and ran the last three in 38sec, in ground which did not suit her She beat all but Foglia d’Oro in the Levin Handicap last week, and she looks all the better for that outing She will not contest the Masterton Handicap if there is rain Beginning brilliantly. Kirklea 'Dixon) soon established a lead on Pitfail (Wylie) from the half-mile and increased her advantage to five lengths at the post in 48 4-ssec She ran the final three furlongs in 35 4-ssec. Kirklea is brilliant in track work, but has not been reliable on race days. She has resome of her best efforts at Mastertun. but needs two scratchings to re-enter the Solway Handicap.
