RAILWAY'S BEST CUSTOMER
'T'HE farming industry is the New Zealand Railways best customer. Last year the railways carried 3,463,908 tons, or 33.4 per cent, of the total freight, of primary produce, lime and fertilisers and received £7,799,989 in charges out of its total revenue of £25,683,515 for freight cartage. In addition, a significant proportion of the balance was made up of charges for the cartage of timber, posts, cement, petrol and oil products, stores and farm machinery consigned to or by farmers.
