The American tenor Mario Lanza died at home today shortly after leaving a Rome hospital.
Mr Lanza had been in the
hospital for about a week. He was said to be having a treatment for a minor illness. A friend said he had a sudden heart attack and died shortly after noon.
Born in New York on January 31. 1921, his real name was Alfred Arnold Cocozza.
He was once a piano mover. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945, then made recordings and appeared on American radio shows and made concert tours with George London and Frances Yeend as the Bel Canto Trio, before he appeared in films.
