Magistrate’s Court MEN ADMIT WOOL THEFTS FROM LOBURN FARMERS

Several visits had been made by two men to farms in Loburn, from which they took loads of wool away in a truck and car later selling it to wool stores in Christchurch and Timaru for £433 Is sd, said Sergeant V. F. Townshend in the Magistrate's Court yesterday when Clifton Halliday, aged 39, a workman, and Percival Reginald Honey, aged 37, unemployed (Mr L. G. Holder), pleaded guilty to a joint charge of theft of wool valued at £317 8s 8d from John Edward Prattley between August 29 and September 8.

Honey also admitted thefts of wool valued at £B4 7s 6d on September 2, and wool valued at £8 on September 15, and Halliday admitted the theft of wool valued at £3l 5s 3d on September 2. Both men were remanded bv Mr N. M. Izard, S.M., to October 15 for a probation officer’s report and sentence, bail being granted in their own recognisance of £3OO, with sureties for the same amount. Sergeant Townshend said Praitley, a Loburn farmer, complained to the Rangiora police on September 5 that a large quantity of wool had been stolen from his property. Further complaints of thefts were made some days later Police investigating the thefts interviewed Halliday, who admitted his part in the offences, -amd an examination of his car and Clothing by Criminal Investigation Branch officers revealed particles of wool. Honey was then questioned and admitted using his truck to cart the wool, with assistance from Halliday. “It was ascertained that the men removed wool from Loburn properties on more than one occasion,” said Sergeant Townshend.

“Both men admitted sharing most of the proceeds of the wool, which they sold under false names.’’ he said. F. Townshend. However, he'walked out before he was attended to and was found by the police staggering on the footpath. The accused admitted he had fallen off his motor-cycle and when he was arrested he refused to get into the patrol car, Sergeant Townshend said. The accused was in a fighting mood. He was subdued. and handcuffed and was taken to the Central Police Station where he was certified by Dr. F. L. Scott as being unfit to be in charge of a motor vehicle. ASSAULT ADMITTED

The complainant was driving down a street looking for a parking place and eventually he found one. said Sergeant M. J. Ryan The accused came up to him. opened the car door and had said. ■‘What the hell to you think you are doing?” He then hit the complainant on the mouth, breaking his dentures and cutting his lip. The accused had seven previous convictions. McKernan said from the dock that he was very sorry he had lost his temper. ASSAULTED WIFE For assaulting his wife at their home in Main road, Kaiapoi, on Wednesday evening, Reginald Martin Swords, a freezing worker, was fined £5- He pleaded guilty. STOLE OVERCOAT For stealing an overcoat from a parked car in Bedford row on February 26. Lester Cyril Needham, aged 28. a labourer (Mr J. N. Matson), was convicted and discharged. He pleaded guilty. OBSCENE LANGUAGE Lyall Dixon, aged 19. a factory hand, was fined £lO on a charge of using obscene language in Kilmore street on August 29. He pleaded guilty. About midnight Traffic Officer Baldwin stopped a car in Kilmore street which he had checked at speeds of up to 50 miles an hour,

A theft of a frock and a roll of adhesive tape, valued at £6 19s 6d, from a shop on September 11, was admitted by a woman who was granted interim suppression of her name. For supplying liquor to persons under 21 years of age the licensee of His Lordships Hotel, < Leslie William Jamieson, was fined £2 on each ot two charges. The head barman at the hotel, Hugn William Pearce, was fined £3 on each of two similar charges. Both men, who were represented by Mr B. McCelland, pleaded not guilty to the charges. UNDER AGE IN HOTEL Three students who were found in the bar of the Clarendon Hotel on Saturday morning, August 1, were 19 years of age, said Sergeant M- J. Ryan. Thomas Ross Glubb was fined £2 for giving false particulars to a constable, £2 for purchasing liquor under age, and £ 1 for being on licensed premises when under age. Robert Alexander Ness was fined £2 for being on licensed premises and £2 for purchasing liquor under age. Robert Gerard Adamson was fined £2 for being on licensed premises under age. LIQUOR NEAR DANCE

For having liquor near the Hibernian Hall when a dance was in progress on August 15, Dale Keith Edwards, aged 25, was fined £3.

FAILED TO ATTEND CAMP For failing to attend Army camps, Gerald William Edmonds and Kenneth Noel Frew were each fined £2O. REMANDED FOR SENTENCE

John Garrick Ferguson Pirie, aged 21, was remanded to October 15 lor sentence alter he had been convicted on two charges of using indecent language in a public place, and of performing an indecent act tn a public place The Magistrate did not agree with Mr H. S. Thomas's assertion that the shop where the offences took place was not a public place. Convicting and remanding Pirie, the Magistrate said that he was liable to 12 months' imprisonment on each charge. He asked for a probation officer’s report. Pirie's bail was renewed. REMANDED On a charge ol extortion by threat on or about September 15. a man, who was granted interim suppression of his name, was remanded to October 29 He was represented by Mr B. McClelland and Mr P. H. T. Alpers appeared for the prosecution. The accused’s bail was renewed.

Alan Alexander Hamilton, aged 29 (Mr B J. Drake) and Hector Thorburn Lauer, aged 28 (Mr G. R. Lascelles) were remanded to October 22 on a cnarge of theft valued at £9 on June 12. Mr Drake said, in objecting to the remand, that the two accused nad first appeared before the Court on this charge on July 13 Some of the remands had been granted because his client was in hospital, but the police were now unable to locate their main witness, and he asked that the charge be dismissed lor want of prosecution. He was supported by Mr Lascelles. Sergeant V. F. Townshend said up until the present only two or three of the remands had been requested by the police and the rest were asked for by counsel. The Magistrate granted the remand as requested by the police. Alice Mareuerita Gillman, aged 34 (Mr B. J Drake) was remanded to October 15 on a charge of theft valued at £6 18s 6d on September 19. John Sheldon Danielson, aged 18. was remanded to October 15 on a charge of converting a car valued at £125 on September 27. His bail was renewed.
