DEFERMENT OF LOAN
Effect On Plans Of
Industry
The Local Authorities Loans Board’s deferment of a decision on the loan for the Christchurch Lyttelton road tunnel was a “serious blow” to the industrial work of his office, the Canterbury Public Relations Officer (Mr E. G. Beckett) told the monthly meeting of the Progress League. Early construction of the tunnel road had been emphasised in negotiations with new industries for Christchurch, he said. “Several companies have made their decision in favour of Christchurch with regard to the improved facilities to come in the near future —not in 10 or 20 years as could easily happen.” Mr Bdbkett said only the impressive drive by the Road Tunnel Authority and other organisations to get the loans board decision reversed had made it possible in the last two weeks to persuade two new overseas companies to decide to build their factories in Christchurch.
