90 MILLION OYSTERS
Record Catch At Bluff
(New Zealand Press Association)
INVERCARGILL, October 8.
The Bluff oyster fleet brought in from Foveaux Strait a record catch of about 99,000 sacks of oysters during the eight-month season that ended last week. The previous best season for the fleet was 1949, when the catch was 97,574 sacks.
In spite of long periods in port during May, June and July, the boats dredged up about 90,000.000 oysters which brought in wholeales prices, nearly £200,000.
An additional boat coming into service and bringing the fleet’s strength to 12 contributed to the record. But merchants report that as well as catches being big. the oysters were the best in quality for several years.
