STEWART ISLAND SERVICE

Matai Makes First

Voyage

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL. October 6.

It was a red letter day for Stewart Islanders today- After months of controversy over the ferry service, they caught their first glimpse of the ship which will make regular weekly visits to the island with passengers and freight.

The Government ship Matai, which replaces the Wairua and the James O’Brien, berthed at the Half Moon Bay wharf at 10.30 a m. and after unloading general cargo sailed for Bluff soon after 1 p.m. Twenty-five passengers were on board.

The Matai on the return trip, with 16 passengers, struck a heavy swell in Foveaux Strait.

Captain I. D. Williams did not push the ship on her first run, but she made good time on both trips.

The sight of the Matai today cheered the islanders no end as the ship carried beer—both draught and bottled —which had been out of supply.
