PRINCE ALI NEAR LAST
Outsider’s Win At Auckland •'The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. October 4. Captain Lancaster, a colt from Takanini, caused one of the biggest two-year-old upsets for many a day when he accounted for the warm favourites, Prince Ali and Miriam, and nine others in the £l3OO Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie yesterday. Between them Prince Ali and Miriam carried of the £776? invested on the race and neither paid a dividend Miriam came fourth in the finish and Prince Ali had only CivicCentre and Chatsmore behind him Stradown collected the £250 for second and Bewitch ran third.
Captain Lancaster had not raced btlore and he had given little sign in his training work of the last week or two of being able to cope with the best of the more experi • enced youngsters. But this he did in fine style, going strongly through a gap on the inside to the front in the last furlong and keeping on gamely to win by half a length. He was the outsider but two. returning his few supporters £54 7s 6d for a win and £8 8s 6d for a place. By Ruthless from the South Island-bred mare, Spice (Lo Zingaro—Sally Sage', Captain Lancaster is owned by Mrs R. Rowan of Manurewa and trained by P McIlroy. He was ridden by K. D. Campbell, who was previously successful in the race on Estimate tn 1954 and Smiling Princess (1953). Terrorist and Pine Ridge lost ground at the start and Miriam. Prince Ali. Gossamer, Civic Centre. Bewitch and Captain Lancaster were very prominent. Miriam, Gossamer and Prince Ali (outside) were soon running freely in front from Bewitch. Stradown. Captain Lancaster and Civic Centre. There was a gap to Chatsmore and Bargoed. Miriam started to shorten stride once they were in the straight and Gossamer and Prince Ali also began to lose ground. Captain Lancaster came to the front on the ii.side with Gossamer in hot pursuit. Stradowm was also there battling well. Stradown kept up a game challenge. but Captain Lancaster would rot be denied and he scored handily by half a length from Stradown, which was second by a length from Bewitch. Miriam came fourth and Buzzami was fifth, followed by Bargoed. Gossamer. Terrorist. Prince All. Civic Centra and ChaUmor*.
