Moa Hunter Traces Found
Although preliminary trowelling in the front of a house in Redcliffs revealed evidence of feasting and the presence of shattered moa bones and pieces of egg shell —establishing the find as in the moa hunter period of the Maoris —nothing further of significance was found when members of the Canterbury Museum Archaeological Club carried out digging on the site on Saturday.
The excavation was made on Mr Murphy’s property, 126 Main road, Redcliffs, who last week unearthed a layer of shell while digging up his front lawn. Members of the club transferred their attention from excavations in the cave at Redcliffs, to Mr Murphy’s lawn, confining their digging to an area of about 140 square feet which was pegged out into smaller squares for the trowelling work.
