NEW CHURCH HALL
Foundation Stone
Ceremony The congregation of the Aldred Memorial Methodist church, St Albans, gathered out-of-doors yesterday against a background of bricks, timber and steel reinforcements. The occasion was the laying of the foundation stone of their new church hall at the corner of Knowles street and Nancy avenue. The Rev. C. E. Dickens led the litany, and the stone was laid by Mr P. A. Le Brun, a member of the foundation trust. Because of illness the minister of the church (the Rev. H. K. Brown) was unable to attend the ceremony.
A touch of colour was added when members of the thirtyseventh company of the Girls’ Life Brigade, paraded before the congregation. They will use the hall when it is completed early next year. The hall covers a 48 by 33 feet area, and has so far been built almost entirely by voluntary labour. It will comprise a single shell with provision for adding a stage and class-rooms at a later date. Other members of the official party were:—
The Rev. V. R. Jamieson, chairman of Methodist churches in the Christchurch district; the Rev. N. P. Larsen, minister of the Bryndwr Methodist church; the Rev. B. R. C. Nottage, minister of the St. Albans Presbyterian church; Mr Colin Ayers, the architect who designed the new hall; and Mr W. S. B. Good, secretary of the foundation trust.
