WAIPUKURAU MEETING
Cabonne Picked In Cup “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. October 2 The Waipukurau Jockey Club, which claims to have staged the first race meeting In Hawke s Bay in 1859, will celebrate its centennial with a large and interesting programme tomorrow. An elaborate array of trophies has been given by the families of former owners, breeaexs and officials who played their part in the club's progress since its foundation. There is one for each race on the programme. The main event is the Waipukurau Centennial Cup, run over 10 furlongs and a half. This is the first leg, of the T.A.B. double. The Woodville trainer, S. A. Brown, who won the Waipukurau Cup in 1957 and 1958 with Golden Bank, will be represented l?y Elrey and St. Reynard this year. Botn have been in form, Elrey having won twice in his last four starts and St. Reynard was a winner two starts back. _ . Other good prospects are Cabonne and Royal Fountain which both shaped well when tried over middle distances at the recent meeting at Hastings. A close third to Savage and Diadochi in the T. H. Lowry Memorial Handicap last Saturday is a good pointer to the prospects of Cabonne. Wonder Gold, which has been placed in his last three starts, is a form runner for the second leg, the Wall Memorial Handicap. Hts strongest opponents might be Regal Dignitary, Gouldvink and Yorker. There has been very little rain in the Hawke's Bay district for some weeks and the ground should be in good order. The forecast is for fair weather.
