EPSOM TODAY AT RANDWICK
Noholme Favourite For Big Mile (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. October 2. More heavy backing for In Love shortened the gelding’s Epsom Handicap price three points, and it will be double-figure odds bar two, when course betting on the big mile opens at Randwick tomorrow. Discussions after the final acceptances and barrier draw made general opinion all the stronger, that the Epsom was a two-horse race— Noholme and In Love. The meeting at Randwick on Saturday will open the Australian Jockey Club's 1959 spring carnival. The fixture holds vital importance as a lead to the Caulfield Cup meeting and the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
There were only nine acceptors for the Derby, and there is only one inter-state representative—the Victorian. Polo Bay. The A.J.C. Metropolitan, run over 13 furlongs at Randwick next Monday, attracted 18 final acceptors. The Melbourne-owned and trained Sir Blink will carry No. 1 saddle cloth in that race.
Everything points to the opening day of the carnival on Saturday as being one of the most colourful Epsom-Derby days in years. The glamour horse of the day will be the grey, Martello Towers, which i» expected to start one of the hottest favourites in the history of the Derby.
