TROTTING Bracket May Win At Ashburton

The Templeton trainer, D. G. Jones, should produce the winner of the E’.gin Handicap, the second leg of the double at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s spring meeting today. Jones has Couthie and Red Belle in the race, and both have worthwhile recent efforts to their credit. If they race up to their besf, both could finish in the money.

Red Belle is probably more reliable than Couthie. She finished third in the race won by Space King at New Brighton on September 19 when making a fresh start. She should be a much-improved mare today, and is selected to win.

Couthie was runner-up to Royal Brittania at Methven last week after losing ground at the start. She ran on in grand style for her placing and should be hard to beat. Elope looked unlucky last week at Methven when he finished fifth in the race won by Royal Brittania. He received a good run to the straight, but had trouble working clear. He did not get into the open until too late; otherwise he would probably have returned a dividend. Captivus paced a sound race for fourth at Methven, and he will probably be better suited by the firmer footing expected at Asnburton. Lavengro will make a fresh start in this field. He made a forward showing at the Addington trials on Tuesday and may be capable of winning first up. Fire Bell, Sharwalo. Awarua and Dither appeal most of the remainder. Chance For Prince Prince will have bright prospects of extending his record of two successive wins in the first leg of the double, the President’s Handicap. Prince is one of the most promising young pacers about, and even from 48 yards his prospects are highly rated. He ■will be bracketed with Anne Peterson and On Side, the lastnamed recording an impressive run at the Addington trials on Tuesday. Stylish Petro and Teryman both have worthwhile recent efforts to their credit and they could do best of the others, although Mulgrove, Spring Chat, Waitaki Child and Direct Rhythm are entitled to healthy respect. The meeting between the majority of the top-class pacers in

commission in the Ashburton Flying Stakes will be among the highlights of the day. Caduceus will face one of the sternest tests of his career when he attempts to concede starts of up to 48 yards over one mile and a half. The brilliant U. Scott stallion is in such fine form at present that the task should be within his reach. In Demand C. C. Devine’s bracket of False Step and Thunder will be in demand, as also will be the Auckland challenger, Gentry, which has compiled an outstanding record in Canterbury. Lady Belmer, Mayneen, and Lady Shona are others capable of taking part in the finish. The track at Ashburton was irrigated last Monday, and with a shower later in the week it will be splendid order. The forecast is for fair weather. The double will be on the President's and the Elgin Handicaps Acceptances:— CHERTSEY HANDICAP, of £250; trotters; 3mln 37sec class; one mile and a half.—Attract (9).
