Attempted Assassination Of Mr Bandaranaike

There will be deep regret in New Zealand at the news of the attempt on the life of the Prime Minister of Ceylon, Mr S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike. Assassination is a weapon of politics that, happily, is rarely encountered in the Commonwealth; but ancient and modern history provides instances of profound effects that have followed drastic acts against political leaders. Everyone will hope that Mr Bandara-

naike will recover and resume the leadership of his country. He has had anything but an easy task since becoming Prime Minister in 1956 as leader of a coalition. Indeed, he has several times seemed to be on' the verge of political disaster, especially as members of the original coalition deserted him. But lately he has shown signs of pulling through—muddling through, some observers have said—and he was expected to retain office for the full term for which he was elected. It is to be hoped that he will be spared to do so. Democracy is not so firmly established in Ceylon that it could come unscathed through a political change wrought by violence.
