FIRE NEAR NEW SHIP

Nuclear-Powered Savannah (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) CAMDEN (New Jersey), September 23. A fire broke out today alongside the Savannah, the world’s first nuclear-powered merchant ship, which is nearing completion in the yards of the New York Shipbuilding Corporation at Camden, New Jersey, British United Press reported. Authorities said the fire broke out in the ways beside the mooring berth of the sleek, white cargo-passenger vessel. The £7,500.000 ship was launched at the shipyard on July- 21. It was then towed to berth at the yard for completion. British United Press said the fire started in the roof over enclosed launching ways about 500 ft from where the Savannah is berthed. It was out of control for about two hours, but firemen managed to prevent it from spreading from the roof.

The Savannah, launched by Mrs Eisenhower on July 21, is being fitted with superstructure and internal equipment.
