OLD SALT IN FORM

Somers Memorial At Te Arolia

‘Tlit Press' Special service AUCKLAND, September 25. Having wound up their preparations with pleasing work yesterday. Old Salt and Beau Way are in firm favour for the Ralph Somers Cup at the Te Aroha Jockey Club's spring meeting tomorrow. Each is a four-year-old, Old Salt with 7-5, and Beau Way with 51b more. They are both in solid form.

The Ralph Somers Cup will be the first leg of the double. The form candidates, as well as Beau Way and Old Salt, include Waipari, Gold Kip. Gene Tui and News Venture.

The issue looks open in the second leg, the Electric Handicap, but there is not much doubt that the most popular runners will be Attila and Bunyarra, which is the top-weight with 9-7. Bunyarra will most likely have his handicap considerably reduced,. the Takanini apprentice. G. I. Willetts, who has been engaged for him. being entitled to claim an allowance of 71b in the race. Attila has 8-8. which is 21b more than he carried at his last start when second behind Bunyarra in the Shorts Handicap at Avondale on September 4. On that occasion Bun.varra carried 9-2, so if his young rider claims the allowance he will meet Attila on 41tj better terms. Showers .during the last few days have eased the ground, but the going promises to be in good order if there is no further rain. Selections: 11 a.m.—Herriesvllle Hurdles: Four Freedoms, Glengairn, Didymus. 11.35 a.m.—Nursery Handicap: First division: Chatsmore. Christmas Second division: Collynie, Don Palatine. 12.10 p.m.—Tirohia Hack Handicap: Shakespeare, Marwon, Bright Ways. 12.55 p.m.—Ralph Somers Cup: Old Salt, Beau Way, Waipari, 1.35 p.m.—Mangaiti Hack Handicap: Grasher. Floutulla. Black Opal. 2.25 p.m.—Electric Handicap Attila, Bunyarra, Lawful. 3.5 p.m.—Mokena Hack Handicap: Triple Count. Volition, County. 3.45 p.m.—Waimata Handicap: Nerula, Admiral’s Fair, Micky Hill.

ning Boy, and Kelp. Kelp will be one of three Riccarton representatives. Others will be Captain Hunt and McCool. McCool might hot have quite enough racing to fit him for a return to his best at a middle distance, but that might depend finally on how the race is run. McCool has class, and class must always be respected. Dunedin Guineas Shortest-priced favourite today will probably be Cadiz in the Dunedin Guineas. This brilliant Dunedin-owned Riccarton-trained chestnut will be having his first test as a miler. He is not bred on staying lines, but he appears to have the qualities necessary to meet today’s test adequately. There was light rain at Wingatui on Thursday night, but the dust was flying yesterday, and the weather in the afternoon was sunny. The track is not carrying much grass in places, and there will almost certainly be some fast gallops today.
