MORE COMPETITION IN TENDERS
Prices Below Local Body Estimates (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 24. Fiercer competition among Auckland contractors is resulting in below estimate tenders for local bodies, according to the Auckland City Council, the Auckland Drainage Board and some other local authorities. ‘‘There is definitely more competition now in tendering for building, road works and all maintenance work,” said a City Council official. ‘‘Contractors are making more detailed proposals and at present it is certainly a buyer’s market.” Tenders were now being submitted by contractors' as much as 5 to 7 per cent, below estimated cost. The importation of processed bitumen would make tenders for road works even lower in the future, he said, because present estimates allowed for the cost of breaking up the bitumen.
