CHURCH WINDOW BROKEN
Thieves Ransack Vestry An appeal for a coloured glass window to replace one broken when the vestry of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Halswell, was ransacked by intruders earlier in the week, was made by the Rev. R. W. Blair yesterday. “The window has no great monetary value, but we will be celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of the church in 1964, and as the church is in good condition, we are trying to keep it that way,’’ said Mr Elair. “It seems a pity to have to replace the window with just plain glass,” he said. “The window was probably one of an original set which came out from England when the first few Anglican churches were being established in Canterbury,” The vestry was turned upside down in an apparent search for money, but nothing was taken, said Mr Blair. A mission collection box was removed from the vestry and taken outside, but it was empty.
