£5000 AWARD FOR DAMAGES
Attorney-General In Ghana (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ACCRA, September 24. An Accra Court yesterday awarded Ghana’s AttorneyGeneral, Mr Geoffrey Bing Q.C., £5OOO damages against the former Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Information (Mr S. I. Iddrissu) for Slander. Mr Bing brought the action against Mr Iddrissu in a private capacity last June in connexion with allegations of bribery made by the former Parliamentary Secretary. The Court last month found in Mr Bing’s favour and met today to assess the amount of damages. Mr Bing’s counsel said that the money would be paid to an educational trust for the benefit of Ghanaian children.' The alleged slander was committed at a press conference at which Mr Iddressu accused Mr Bing of having taken money in connexion with the Camp Bird affair.
Mr Iddrissu was dismissed from his post as Parliamentary Secretary for having written a letter to Mr Emil Savundra. then the resident director of Camp Bird Ltd., in Ghana, granting the company sole mineral rights in Ghana.
