PEOPLE IN THE PLAY

The former Wellington and New Zealand fast bowler, Tom Pritchard, now living in England has given the Wellington Cricket Association a trophy in the form of a mounted cricket ball. At the association’s annual meeting recently, Mr J. H. Phillips, manager of the New Zealand team which toured England last year, told delegates of Mr Pritchard’s gesture.

An ankle injury suffered early in the Rugby season spoilt R. D. Hoskin’s chances of selection for the New Zealand team this year. A strongrunning five-eignths or centre, Hoskin is still considered a strong candidate for the New Zealand tour of South Africa next year. Recently, while playing for the newly formed Kotuku club at Greymouth, he showed a return to his best form when he scored two excellent tires.

The Wellington and former All Black front row prop, I. M. Vodanovich, will play his 100th game for Welling ton today. Vodanovich played his first game for his province, for a Wellington fifteen, against the Centurions in 1950. He represented New ►Zealand in the [three tests against Australia in [1955, and is still considered •a strong contender for one of [the front row positions in the [New Zealand team to tour •South Africa next year.

[ It seems almost certain that [the High School Old Boys' ’senior team next season will •be without its ... . [big lock for- x,.i [ward, D. S. ’Richards. He • > came to Old [Boys from the [North Canter- [ 'bury district ’ 'last year, but : [recently was i [transferred to ’Hawarden by [his firm. The [promise Richcards showed this season was considering he had [played only hockey until 1956. [ln that year, he played for •Amberley seniors and repre'sented the North Canterbury [sub-union in the next two [years. He was chosen for the •Canterbury sub-unions’ side in i 1957 and in 1958 played for [Country. ★ ► [ Two Canterbury representative cricketers, B. A. Howarth [and Miss Jennifer Johnstone, [were married last week. Ho[warth, who is one of the East •Christchurch club’s most con'sistent batsmen, was also [chosen as twelfth man for [New Zealand on one occasion. [His fine batting and fielding !may again bring him into the [representative side this season.
