Wellington Painter Sells Work
(New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 25. Mr Leonard Mitchell, a wellknown Wellington painter, and twice winner of the Kelliher Prize, sold a still life yesterday for 300gns to a Sydney buyer who has requested his name be not published. This is a record price for a non-commissioned easel painting in Wellington, if not in New Zealand. The painting, “The Love Letter” was originally exhibited in 1955 and was then priced at 50gns. The subject is a massed effect with flowers in a jug beside a window through which can be seen Wellington harbour. Beside it on the table is an open letter.
