REQUIREMENTS IN POWER

Normal Needs Considered (New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, September 25. Major heavy industries, such as the production of aluminium, cannot be taken into account when estimating electric power requirements in New Zealand because of the tremendous amount of power required for them alone. The Electricity Department has sufficient worries tending to normal needs, without considering surplus requirements. The production of 250.000 tons of aluminium requires 5000 million kilowait hours annually, the equivalent output of two Benmore stations and one such as at Manapouri.

These figures were given by’ the General Manager of the New Zealand Electricity Department iMr A. E. Davenport) in his address to delegates to the conference of the Electric Supply Authorities’ Association of New Zealand at Rotorua today.

‘‘The report of the planning committee did not take into consideration heavy industry such as aluminium.” he said, “because it is so large we cannot make provision in our normal business.”
