SWEDISH SHIP, BARRANDUNA
Looks Belie Age c
With her hull and superstructure brightly painted, the Swedish motor-ship Barranduna. now at Lyttelton, has an appearance which belies her age of 17 years. The vessel does not look any older than when she was last at Lyttelton about 10 years ago.
The Barranduna can more than hold her own with many newei ships in performance. Asked yesterday about the ship's cruising speed of 161 knots, as reported in a North Island newspaper. her master, Captain Gunnar Aberg said. “Sixteen and a half knots? Let me tell you that we did 181 coming from Wellington last night—lo hours 12 minutes from the time we left the wharf at Wellington until we dropped anchor in the harbour here. And we still had eight revolutions (a minute) up our sleeves.” Built in World War II and launched from the yards of AB Gotaverken, Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1941, the Barranduna was not commissioned until 1945. She is of 5681 tons gross and is powered by a seven-cylinder, double-act-ing diesel engine of 10,000 horsepower. The hull of the vessel is specially strengthened for navigation in ice.
