Ari assurance that navigational aids would be installed at the Christchurch airport in the future, was given by the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr Mathison) in the House of Representatives today, but he said the expense was not yet necessary. Mr W. H. Gillespie (Opposition. Hurunui) had said during discussion of the Civil Aviation estimates that Harewood, which was now being used as an American base for Antarctic operations, was closed to aircraft at times. “Harewood has a high degree of visibility—one of the highest in New Zealand.” said Mr Mathison. “Previously ground control approach equipment Was suggested for Harewood. That was in the time of the previous Administration. but investigations made then showed that of the 12 days the airport had been closed in that period, this equipment would have allowed operations on only two. Mr Gillespie: The Americans w iuld not want to be held up. Mr Mathison: Yes; bu* there is no urgency for Harewood compared with some other aerodromes not so well blessed by nature.
