I he Prime Minister (Mr Nash) told the House of Representatives today he still did not think it was necessary to send the controversial National Roads Amendment Bill to a select committee for discussion. “I will try and co-operate with the Minister of Works (Mr Watt) to see that the Roads Board policy is placed before the House in the best way possible for all concerned. I still don’t think it’s necessary to send the bill to any committee, but as I said earlier, if circumstances change I’ll be happy to consider the matter again,” Mr Nash said.
At the end of today’s sitting of the House, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake) asked the Prime Minister to tell the House what he was going to do with the bill. “Where is it? What on earth has happened to it? There is a lot of concern about it. and I want to know what is going to happen to it. The Prime Minister promised us last Friday that he would tell us last Tuesday
what was going to happen to the bill,” Mr Holyoake said. Mr Nash said he understood further discussions on the bill had been held today. Representatives of the Municipal Association had talks on the bill with National Roads Board executive officers in Wellington today. Later, the Director of Roading 'Mr P. L. Laing) reported to MiWatt on the talks.
